Warm weather will soon be here and you know what that means.  It's time to get your grill ready for some delicious outdoor cooking.  Whether you're a Grill Master or just love the occasional cook-out, getting your grill ready for the warm weather is the first step toward making some savory meals.  Just like a car, you've got to kick the tires and check under the hood before you can get started!  A small amount of effort today will ensure that your grill is in top-notch condition, so you can take those curves and be the winner with every sizzling bite.  Here are some hints and tips to help you bring your grill or griddle back to life. Whether you have a grill or griddle, you need to start by giving it a thorough cleaning—it's essential after months of hibernation. For griddles, removing rust and left over food is essential.  There are several cleaners you can get to help with this job.  For grills, begin with the grates, using a wire brush to remove any leftover residue or grease. For tougher spots, soak the grates in warm soapy water, then scrub them clean. Don’t forget to check the burners on gas grills and ensure the holes aren’t clogged. A pin or a small wire works wonders here. For charcoal grills, empty out the ashes from the previous season and wipe down the bowl. A clean grill not only ensures better-tasting food but also increases the life of your equipment.  We want to prolong its life and ensure that we can make it to 100,000 miles or even more!

Next, inspect your grill for any signs of wear and tear. For gas grills, make sure to examine the gas lines, valves, and connections for leaks or cracks. A simple soapy water test will reveal leaks—if you see bubbles forming, it’s time for repairs or replacements. Check the igniter to ensure it sparks properly; if it doesn’t, consider replacing it. For charcoal grills, check for rust and patch up any small holes to prevent heat loss. Remember, a little maintenance now can save you from headaches later when it's time to fire up your grill and put the pedal to the medal.  

Once you’re sure that your grill is clean and safe, it’s time to season it. Yes, seasoning is not just for cast-iron skillets!  Griddles especially must be seasoned to help food cook evenly and prevent sticking.  Rub a light coat of high-smoke-point oil (like canola or grapeseed oil) onto the grates or griddle surface, then heat the grill for about 15–20 minutes. This step prevents food from sticking, protects your grill from rust, and gives it that seasoned flavor we all love.  You are now pulling ahead in this race, so keep going!

Now that you grill is sparkling clean and ready to go, let the fun begin! Dust off your favorite grilling recipes or try something new—grilled pineapple, anyone?
